Teeth cleaning is very important for maintaining animal health. Brush your pet’s teeth at home. This is the best way to prevent gum disease. There are special toothbrushes, toothpastes, cleaning fluids and many other products for the care of teeth and oral cavity for animals. Toothbrushes for animals are very soft and are designed to fit the shape of the teeth and mouth of animals. You can also find them in the shape of a glove for greater ease of use. Toothpastes for animals have a pleasant taste for them and are not needed rinse.

Never use human toothbrushes or baking soda. They contain ingredients that the animal should not swallow.

If you can’t do it with brushing, you can use an antibacterial solution or gel.

The food you choose for your four-legged friend may be responsible for the development of plaque and tartar, it is better to give dry food to force them to chew their food well. Only if they are babies and we want to start them with food if they do not eat it then you can add some gravy to the dry food to make it tastier.

Soft or sticky foods help in the development of plaque and periodontal disease. Dry food (cookies, croquettes in large cubes) creates fewer dental problems.

Very useful are specially made dental chews (dental chews or dental sticks) for cats and dogs. They like it very much and it is often a good substitute for the days when you don’t brush their teeth. However, only brushing your teeth can remove plaque and food debris below the gum line.

Instructions for brushing teeth at home

The process should be done gradually, step by step, with a lot of patience.

In the beginning, you just keep your pet relaxed. Gently caress his face with your fingers for 1-2 minutes. For the next few days, place a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and let it taste. Choose an animal toothbrush or finger brush, place a small amount of toothpaste on the brush, lift your pet’s upper lip and place the brush on an upper tooth.

With a slow circular motion, gently brush only that tooth and the continuous gum line. Every day you gradually brush more teeth. Go slowly and for as long as your pet’s endurance lasts. After each time reward him with a suitable delicacy and many praises.

7 Creative ways to encourage your cat to drink more water

1 in 3 cats will experience kidney problems in their lifetimes. Many cat lovers have already had to deal with this issue at one time or another, and may already be aware that dehydration worsens kidney disease. With that in mind, here are 7 great ways to encourage your cat to drink more water.

  1. Place water bowls EVERYWHERE

Location, location, location—it really matters! You’d be amazed to learn how sensitive most cats are to the positioning of a water bowl. Even a little unexpected foot-traffic can be enough to keep your cat from having that next drink. Keep fresh water bowls in multiple spots to maximize your feline’s comfort.

  1. Consider feeding your cat wet food

You should talk over any diet change with your veterinarian, but wet food can be a great way to introduce more liquid to your cat. It is always more important that a cat eats, than eats what we want, and it is surprising that not every cat likes wet food, especially as their only diet. So, keep your cat’s preferences in mind and make sure he eats enough of his new diet to maintain his energy level and weight.

  1. Add water or flavor to your cat’s food

Consider adding water or a low sodium chicken broth to canned food or get creative and discuss other flavor options with your veterinarian. You want to find something that’s healthy and appealing to your cat. Remember, each cat is an individual, and even the texture of food can make a difference.

  1. Add flavor to your cat’s water

Consider adding low sodium tuna or clam juice ice cubes to your cat’s water (you may want to use a different tray than you use for your own cubes). The ice will not only keep the water cold longer, but can add a tasty flavor. Alternatively, you can give the cubes to your cat to play with.

  1. Use drinking fountains

Drinking fountains are not only a fun way to encourage your cat to drink; they can make very appealing additions to your home.

  1. Test different bowls

Keep in mind that your cat probably doesn’t want to share the dog’s giant bowl. In fact, the only way you’ll know your cat’s preferences is to swap out different bowls at different times. Better yet, keep several bowls out at all times and see which one drains the fastest. Lastly, consider broadening your definition of “bowl.” Dr. Jane Robertson’s cat, for example, only likes to drink from a clear drinking glass.

  1. Encourage your cat’s drinking quirks

Many cats will embrace less conventional methods of getting water. Many cats, for example, would rather drink from a leaky faucet than an open bowl. If you notice this behavior, by all means, let your cat have a few drips before turning off the faucet.

Is your dog dehydrated?

Some dog breeds prefer hot climates. If your dog enjoys the sun, make sure you provide them plenty of water and keep them under the shade.

There are some dehydration symptoms that you might notice on you pet during the summer period. Some dehydration signs are the following: raised temperature, rapid breathing, dry mouth, excess salivation, sunken eyes fatigue or depression and muscle weakness. If you notice any of these symptoms, wrap your dog in cold wet towels and take them to the vet.

To encourage your dog to drink more water keep the bowl clean and try to add a splash of carrot juice, chicken broth or pieces of their favourite fruit.

The most heat sensitive dog breeds are bulldogs, pugs and Boston terriers. The best hot weather dog breeds are dogs with thin, short coats such as beagles, Chihuahuas and Dalmatians. Keep this in mind if you are going to adopt a new pet.

What do the different dog barking types mean?

Barking is a natural communication and behavior for dogs. Sometimes dogs bark for good reasons, for example when they want to let us know that strangers have approached our house.

There are many different reasons why a dog would bark depending on the way they sound.

Young puppies make a meowing-like sound when they are hungry or when they want warmth. If they make loud noises it means they are hurt and frustrated.

As dogs get older, they have five different types of sounds, used in different situations.

Howling is used as a reaction to certain situations as a siren.

Growling is used to threaten, warn, in defense, in aggression and to show dominance. It is also used when they are playing.

Grunts in dogs are used when they are greeting each other or people.

Whines are used when they are greeting each other to obtain attention, in defense and when they are frustrated or in pain.

Barking is another form of communication and it is used to warn others, to defend a territory, to seek attention and as a response to boredom, excitement, anxiety and loneliness.

Vomiting in dogs

Vomiting involves the forceful contraction of stomach muscles. It can happen right after eating or drinking or after several hours.

Some dogs vomit after eating grass. If your dog vomits more than once, call the vet.

Important information to give to the vet is what the vomit looks like and how many times has your dog vomited.

If your dog has some of the following symptoms you have to call the vet immediately.

– Blood in the vomit
– Your dog is acting like he wants to vomit, but nothing is expelled
– Your dog is bloated or has swollen abdomen
– Your dog has eaten something poisonous
– Fever or depression
– Yellow or pale gums
– You haven’t vaccinated your dog
– Your dog is in pain
– Diarrhea

In most cases when dogs vomit, it is advised to withhold food for 24 hours and provide small amounts of water frequently.

Over the next few days switch the dog back to his normal diet. Some foods that it is recommended to feed your dog after vomiting are fiber and decrease the fat intake.

Things you didn’t know about dogs

Dog owners think they know everything about their dogs but there are some things they are not aware of.

Each year, 6 million dogs are diagnosed with cancer. Researchers run clinical trials on these dogs. Dogs are canine versions of clinical human disorders and clinical trials are easier to run on pets.

Dogs can smell diseases like cancer, diabetes or epilepsy. They can be trained to sniff out lung, breast, skin, bladder and prostate cancers. Some dogs are also used as service dogs for people with diabetes and they alert their owners before they feel the symptoms.

Dogs can be as smart as 2-year-old children. Border Collies are the most clever dog breeds and they are capable to understand up to 200 words. The smartest breeds are Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Dobermans.

Dog mouths carry pathogens that can harm humans. In some cases dog food has caused food poisoning in humans by salmonella bacteria. Hygiene is very important for dog owners.

Dogs feel envy when they see other dogs getting treats and they feel agitated when they are unrewarded. If they don’t get a reward, they stop doing the trick much faster.

When dogs eat out of the garbage, they live a shorter life than other dogs that avoid that. Researchers found that bold and aggressive breeds die young.

Litter box training for your kitten

When you welcome a new pet at home you have to make sure you have all the things you need. One of the most important things to buy for your cat is a litter box. You have to train your cat from a young age so they will end up instinctively using the litter box.

When you get a new kitten you can start teaching it how to use the litter box at 3 to 4 weeks of age.

Make sure it knows the location of the litter box and that the box is not placed in a noisy and hard to reach place.

When you first bring the kitten at home, place it in the litter box a few times throughout the day at times when the cat would normally go to the bathroom. When they eventually learn hot to use it leave the alone, as cats prefer privacy. The box needs to be cleaned often as cats are very clean animals.

If you follow these rules, your cat will learn how to use the litter box in no time.
